Shay Comaskey was a great supporter of Chesham Museum. As a longtime landlord in the town he knew that Chesham needed somewhere to collect and display artefacts relating to the history of the area so that local people could appreciate and learn about the town's history.
He, in fact, decorated his pub with a wide selection of memorabilia from the First and Second World War and gave several artefacts to the museum, including a wooden malt shovel.
In offering the former stables building behind the Gamekeepers Lodge in Bellingdon Road as a first home for the museum, he solved the problem that had dogged museum supporters of previous years and opened the way for its eventual move to its present home.
He held several auctions in the pub to get the museum up and running, which was a great encouragement for the committee of which he was a founder member.
Without Shay's vision the museum could not have made enough progress to enable it to move to its present home. He was wholeheartedly in favour of the museum's development and was delighted to see it open in Market Square in October 2009.
