In September 1938 I met a young soldier he was stationed where I lived in Erith, Kent. My mother used to invite these soldiers in for a cup of tea sometimes when they were passing. Ray King would sit and tell us about Chesham - where he was born and bred; the lovely countryside and the good neighbours and friend.
Ray was sent abroad in late 1939 and I lost touch with him - but one day whilst reading a magazine I saw an advertisement for a probationer nurse wanted in Chesham Cottage Hospital. I just had to apply and find out more about Chesham. I got the job. Ray King eventually returned to England but he didn't know that I had worked in Chesham for three years. He eventually caught up with me in 1945 - I was working in Watford.
We were married in 1947 and spent many happy years walking along the Vale - over Pednor and down through Bois Wood, all the places he had told me about in 1938. We had 60 happy years together before he passed away in 2007, but still I walk up over Lowndes Park down through Pednor and down Bois Moor along the Backs and up and over Dungrove to White Hill - enjoying the views and remembering Happy Days.
