Lawrence Lacy remembers Tom Goff and Mrs Holland of Townfield Yard

There was a man who had a large homemade machine. It was constructed from four large pram wheels, a bicycle seat, pedals and a chain connected to a grinding wheel. He sat on the seat, pedalled and sharpened knives and scissors for his customers. Then I remember Tom Goff. He was a friendly old man who loved alone. He kept a dove in his room and he knew a lot about birds, plants, flowers and trees. We had a dog called Nellie who developed sore places on her back. Tom made up an herbal potion for us and it was very effective. Mrs Holland was also an interesting person. We often saw her sitting in the doorway of her home. She had a large wooden basket and some bunches of flowers. She made the flowers into small posies and carefully arranged them in the basket. She would catch the early morning train to London, sell her posies and return home in the afternoon.

Lawrence Lacey, born 1915.
