Lowndes Park covers an area of 28 acres. Part of it was given to the town in 1953 by the Lowndes family. A stone next to an iron gate leading towards St Mary's Church is marked WL, William Lowndes, and marks the boundary to the Lowndes Estate.
The Park used to contain the grounds of Bury Hill House (plaque O), which overlooked Skottowe's Pond (plaque P). The house was bought from the Skottowe family, owners of the Park in the 18th century, and then demolished by the Lowndes family, who owned the Bury.
