At the top of Francis Yard, on the opposite side of East Street, is the fine Botley House and, at the junction with Townfield and Red Lion Street, the Old British School, pictured left (plaque B). This was Chesham's first Free School founded in 1828 with 150 pupils. The bricks show scoring by the pupils' slate pencils. In Townfield, at the corner, is a steep flight of steps known as Jacob's Ladder (plaque C). Also in Townfield is the site of Townfield Chapel (plaque D), a place of worship for the Particular Baptists from 1820 to 1915, when they moved to Newtown.
