The Market Square (4)
The Market Square contains some of Chesham's oldest buildings. The Town Hall used to stand in the middle of the Square but was demolished in 1965 as part of a road-widening scheme. It was replaced in 1992 by the Clock Tower, a replica of the 19th century original, as part of Chesham's pedestrianisation scheme. The new Town Hall can be reached via Baines Walk, off the High Street. The refurbishment of Chapter One booksellers has been the recipient of Chesham Society design awards. The Chesham Building Society (plaque A), with offices in Market Square and in the Broadway, was established in 1845 and is the oldest independent building society in existence. |
